English Alum Returns to Talk Peace Corps and Journalism Posted on September 25th, 2012 by

Erin Luhmann ’08 will be returning to the hill once again Friday, October 5. From 3:00 to 4:00, she will discuss her time with the Peace Corps, graduate school, and journalism with students.

After graduating from Gustavus with an English major in 2008, Luhmann headed to Kyrgyzstan as a Peace Corps Volunteer. For the next two years, she taught English to high school students in rural Tory-Aiger Village. There, she experienced rural life at it’s finest with outhouses, bi-weekly bathing, and building friendships within the community.

Luhmann’s experience in Kyrgyzstan lead her to focus on human-interest stories locally and internationally. Now in her second year of graduate school for Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Luhmann continues to focus on social justice reporting and international media development. She has also worked for NEED magazine, a publication that focused on global and domestic humanitarian issues.

Luhmann will be talking with students in the Humanities Resource Center, Confer 230. Any students interested in Peace Corps, graduate school, and journalism should stop by to chat and have some refreshments.
